Maverick House: East Boston’s Famous Hotel
The first Maverick House was built in 1833 and was named in honor of Samuel Maverick. During this time, the hotel served passengers traveling on the Eastern Railroad from Salem and eventually guests associated with the Cunard Line and other nearby industries. The first Maverick House was destroyed by fire, but it was promptly rebuilt on the same site. The second Maverick House was larger than the first and was also destroyed by fire in 1856. It was replaced by the Sturtevant House, a five story brick and brownstone structure. The last hotel on this site was demolished in 1927.
